Bury St Edmunds: Rush-hour misery after lorry crash mayhem
They waited for hours while the lorries were cleared from the carriageway and crash investigators completed their examination of the scene. A large chunk of the westbound carriageway near Bury St Edmunds was shut for more than three hours after the smash, which police believe was caused by ducks in or near the road. Hundreds of vehicles were trapped between junction 47 and the accident site near junction 45. The road was shut off between junction 44 for Bury St Edmunds and 47 for Woolpit and diversions put in place. An air ambulance was initially scrambled for one of the lorry drivers amid fears he had suffered a ‘life-changing head injury’ in the incident, which happened around 5pm.

Commercial director Paul De Santis said: "The bus was crossing the lights at the top of the slip road travelling towards Hanley and the lorry was coming up the slip road.
