Singapore supports Australia's UN bid

20.05.12

Singapore supports Australia's bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for next year and 2014, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday. In his speech, Mr Lee called Australia's international role "well recognised", and noted Singapore's shared commitment with the country "to trade liberalisation and strong global institutions". An important component of the relationship between both countries, he added, is defence cooperation - the Singapore Armed Forces trains in several areas in Australia, such as Rockhampton and Oakey, both in Queensland. These include the World Trade Organisation and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or Apec.
